Sunday is the 80th anniversary of the day the last permanent residents of St Kilda left the islands. The date is now commemorated as St Kilda Day. Boreray, Dun, Hirta and Soay make up the archipelago of St Kilda. Allan MacDonald, a budding photographer, took these photos of the islands. Allan stayed in the Feather Store pictured in this photo. The building was used by St Kildans to store feathers after hunting the birds on the islands. Islanders would use feathers as currency to pay rent to the St Kilda landowners on the mainland. Fulmars, gannets, puffins and razorbills provided a reliable source of food for the inhabitants of St Kilda as the sea was often too rough for fishing. Stac an...
